The Rouskis emigrated from Warrington six months ago and made arrangements to travel 1,000 miles from Port Pirie in south Australia to watch the pre-season game as originally scheduled on February 4 at Coffs Harbour. Three months ago, it was announced the fixture had been switched to its new date and location in Sydney – approximately 600km away – due to the Rugby Football League bringing the Super League season forward to the first weekend in February. That meant the family, from Great Sankey, would have to change their flight, hotel accommodation and car hire arrangements. With the expense incurred on travel changes and cancellations, the Rouskis have lost around £800. As a gesture, South Sydney Rabbitohs have refunded the family with the cost of their tickets. Eileen Rouski said: “We are really upset that we have had to incur these extra costs through no fault of our own.” The Rouskis asked Warrington Wolves if compensation is available and said they were disappointed when told no. Mrs Rouski added: “On contacting Rabbitohs last week they have refunded the cost of our tickets to the match. “Although this does not meet the extra expenses we have incurred we appreciate this gesture of goodwill and would have been happy had Warrington done this for us. “We understand that the change of schedule was beyond their control but if Warrington Wolves wish to build awareness around the globe, including gaining support in Australia, they need to show support for their current international fans. “Despite the problems we have had we are very much looking forward to the match and will be supporting the ‘Wire’ all the way!” The family received an e-mail reply from Wolves after seeking compensation, pointing out that the fixture’s date and venue changes had been published through usual media channels. It was further stated: “As a sports club, we are always subject to changes in venue and timings. Sadly, it’s the nature of our game and in this particular instance we had no control over the venue or timings, and do not offer any compensation for such things.” The family were informed that Wolves would be planning some events in Australia at which fans would be able to meet up with the players.
