Rabbitohs to Announce Captaincy at RTR12

The South Sydney Rabbitohs will announce the Club’s captaincy as part of the pre-game entertainment at this Saturday’s Return to Redfern international trial match between the Rabbitohs and the English Super League’s Warrington Wolves to be played at the Australian Technology Park Performance Centre at Redfern Oval.

The match is scheduled for a 6pm kick off on Saturday 28 January, however the pre-match entertainment will feature a number of traditional and entertaining segments, including the captaincy announcement.

New players to the Rabbitohs squad will be presented with their first Rabbitohs jerseys as part of the traditional jersey handover ceremony from some of the Club’s legends and high profile past and current players, including new recruit Matt King who will take on his former Wolves team mates for the first time in the cardinal red and myrtle green of South Sydney.

Rugby League’s Independent Commission Chairman John Grant, himself a former Warrington player, will be joined on field by Rabbitohs Chairman Nicholas Pappas to be interviewed in front of the Rabbitohs and Warrington faithful, in what is believed to be the first time he has spoken directly with Members and fans from any of the 16 NRL Clubs.

Former South Sydney player and ‘The Contender Australia’ boxing champion Garth Wood will join his brother and Warrington legend Nathan Wood on field to speak to the crowd, and they will also sign autographs ahead of his World Title Eliminator fight with Sam Solimon on Sunday 19 February. All of the current non-playing Rabbitohs players will be available to sign autographs around the ground throughout the day as well.

Former Great Britain International, NRL player and Warrington Tour Manager Brian Carney will entertain the crowd with some of his stories from the Warrington Wolves’ tour to Australia.

Junior Rabbitohs Members who hold a 2012 Return to Redfern ticket also have the opportunity to showcase their skills on Redfern Oval at the Junior Member Clinic being held at 4pm on Saturday. South Sydney and Warrington players will help run the stations in the lead up to the main game later on that afternoon. Members should click here to register for the Junior Member Clinic.

There are plenty of activities for the whole family throughout the day, including the Rabbitohs KidZone which will feature a Rabbitohs jumping castle and free face painting for the kids. Food and beverage outlets will also be available around the ground throughout the duration of the event.

This year’s Return to Redfern match will not only mark the beginning of the season for the Rabbitohs, it also marks the long awaited re-opening of the South Sydney Leagues Club, now known as ‘Souths on Chalmers.’

After nearly five years of redevelopment, Souths on Chalmers will be open for official trading to the public on Saturday 28 January from 10am.

Fans will be able to enjoy the facilities at Souths on Chalmers, located on level 1 of 265 Chalmers St in Redfern, before and after the game between the Rabbitohs and Wolves which will be played directly across the road at the Australian Technology Park Performance Centre at Redfern Oval.

Visitors to Souths on Chalmers will have the opportunity to become Members of Souths on Chalmers on Saturday.

“We’re all really looking forward to Saturday and seeing our team back out on the field, and we’re sure our Members and supporters are as well,” Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson said.

“This is an important day for the South Sydney Football Club as we recognise the history of the Rabbitohs at Redfern Oval, this time bringing an international flavour to the event with the game against one of the world’s best Rugby League teams, the Warrington Wolves.

“Tickets are still available for the game so make sure you don’t miss out on the first game of Rugby League for 2012 by getting your tickets now.”
