The South Sydney Rabbitohs and St George Illawarra Dragons launched the 2012 Charity Shield at ANZ Stadium today with both Clubs providing a focus to the work of Souths Cares and the St George Foundation respectively.

The 29th Charity Shield will be played on Saturday 18 February at 7:30pm at ANZ Stadium, with the Rabbitohs looking to regain the Charity Shield in their final hit out before the season proper begins in a Monday Night Football clash with the Sydney Roosters on Monday 5 March at home at ANZ Stadium.

South Sydney Head Coach Michael Maguire and senior players Michael Crocker and Roy Asotasi were accompanied by St George Illawarra's Head Coach Steve Price, Dragons captain Ben Hornby and player Kyle Stanley at the launch, with tickets going on sale to the general public today.

The Rabbitohs will again be supporting Souths Cares with their proceeds from the game, with a particular focus on the 'Bunny Buddy' program.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs Junior 'Bunny Buddy' Program is designed to provide donated Red and Green Junior Ticketed Memberships to kids in the Club's communities who are involved with Souths Cares' Programs.

This gives many Junior Rabbitohs supporters in the Club's community the chance to attend Rabbitohs home games, visit the Rabbitohs KidZone, enjoy a Rabbitohs Junior Membership and be part of the Rabbitohs family.

In 2011, Souths Cares distributed over 300 donated Junior Rabbitohs Membership Packs to children in the South Sydney district and other regional centres where Souths Cares actively work within the community.

The 'Bunny Buddy' program allows Souths Cares to further engage with the youth of the community and encourage a lifelong relationship with the South Sydney Rabbitohs family.

For just $60, Rabbitohs Members can support this fantastic program by buying and donating Junior Memberships to Souths Cares.

In 2012, as Rabbitohs Members and supporters purchase their 2012 Charity Shield tickets online, those Members and supporters have the opportunity to donate a specified amount of money towards a 'Bunny Buddy' pack.

From as little as a $5 donation, Members and supporters simply need to tick a box on the Charity Shield Ticketek page when purchasing their tickets to have that donation added to the ticket purchase price. 100% of that donation will go towards Souths Cares and the 'Bunny Buddy' program.

Bringing a focus to Souths Cares at today's press conference was Souths Cares Director, the Hon. Kristina Keneally, Rabbitohs player and Souths Cares Teachers' Aide Dave Tyrrell, and four students from La Perouse Public School who work closely with Dave Tyrrell in Souths Cares' Teachers' Aide program.

Rabbitohs Head Coach Michael Maguire says the Charity Shield will be the final piece of the preparation puzzle for his charges before the season kicks off on Monday 5 March.

"I'm really looking forward to my first Charity Shield this year," Coach Michael Maguire said.

"It will be our final run before the competition starts in March so we'll be looking to iron out any kinks and fine tune our game in readiness for the Roosters in round one.

"It will also be our first game at home at ANZ Stadium for the year, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the passion of the Rabbitohs Members and supporters at a game that I have heard so much about.

"We're also helping raise money for Souths Cares and the programs they run with the assistance of our players so it's an exciting night all round."

Michael Crocker says he is eager to play in his first Charity Shield in 2012.

"This will be my first opportunity to complete a full pre-season with the Rabbitohs and to have the chance to play in the Charity Shield," Crocker said.

"We've been putting the efforts in at training since November so it will be good to get out on to our home ground and play in front of our Members and fans in this game.

"Matches against the Dragons are always tough, and the boys tell me the Charity Shield has the intensity of a regular season game.

"We all want to play in traditional match ups like this one with the Dragons so there will be plenty of competition for spots in this year's Charity Shield."

Roy Asotasi says the Rabbitohs will be concentrating on getting their combinations right in the 29th Charity Shield.

"This game will be our last chance to put our combinations into practice before round one so it's a very important game on that level," Asotasi said.

"It's also important from a Souths Cares point of view.

"The players and staff put a lot of time into Souths Cares, helping to deliver their programs and we can all see the difference our efforts make.

"The Charity Shield is a great way to raise awareness for Souths Cares and help raise funds for their programs as well."
